South Africa's richest poker tour gears up for another busy year as the SunBet Poker Tour returns to Time Square in Pretoria for the first live poker festival in 2025. The series already kicked off on February 28 and will run until March 9, with the ZAR 4 Million guaranteed ($217,580) Main Event taking the centre stage.
Four starting days are available throughout the next three days with many notables of the close-knit South African poker community expected to enter the fray. As usual, the poker series takes place in cooperation between Sun International - the leading entertainment operator of South Africa - and the Monster Jam Poker Tour.
In 2024, this very tournament saw two editions at Time Square with Sugen Singh as the defending champion in a field of 418 entries. His victory was followed up by the triumph of Harold Brooks two months later, when yet another deal was struck. Both are expected to return to the tables and try to win another SPT trophy.
The first three starting days will feature a total of 15 levels of 50 minutes maximum, or until the top 15% of the field are reached - whichever of the two options comes first. In previous editions, the action concluded prior to the maximum number of levels. Only the top 12.5% of the field are paid, however, which makes for a tense affair early on Day 2 on March 8 when all survivors of the Day 1 flights return to their seats.
All players start with 40,000 in chips and the opening level features blinds of 100-200 with a big blind ante of 200. This gives everyone 200 big blinds in the opening level and unlimited re-entries are allowed for the first nine levels. The late registration officially closes at the start of level ten.
Day 1a kicks off at noon local time and tomorrow's second flight mirrors the exact same schedule. Day 1c then follows one hour earlier and the final turbo heat runs on March 7 with a reduce level duration of 30 minutes during the registration period and 15 minutes thereafter.
Stay tuned for more of the banter-filled live poker action here in South Africa with many of the SunBet live satellite winners set to join the action today.
